An elegant early 18th century longcase clock in an arabesque marquetry case and the interesting movement with maintaining power. This clock was made during the age of extreme elegance of furniture design and is in a splendid marquetry case which is very largely original with only a very few repairs to some small pieces of inlay. All the major portions of the case are original.

It has a walnut-veneered caddy and two small "chimney" pieces which would have supported brass ornaments but I believe these to be later; a new owner will be able to keep them or dispose of them as they wish. The movement has bolt-and-shutter maintaining power, in full working order, and for the horologists out there, there are six movement pillars all fitted with latches. The dial is also fully latched to the front plate. The chapter ring is signed "Jno Aylward de Guilford"; other clocks by Aylward have been noted as spelling Guildford without the first "d" we currently use. It is believed Aylward worked from 1690 to about 1720; this clock dates from the 1705 to 1710 period.
