A lovely small late 17th Century London-made 30-hour longcase with birdcage movement.

It is a rare survivor as the case is pine, and these have not often lasted over the centuries. The two-handed movement is fronted by an attractive dial signed on the lower edge "Robert Wilkins Londini". The hood was originally rising and had been converted to forward-sliding but luckily the front has never been altered to an opening front door. It has now been restored to a rising style again.

Robert Wilkins was born in c. 1646, apprenticed 1660 and freed in 1670/1. He was in the Clockmakers' Company in 1671 and taking apprentices of his own in 1672. He worked until c. 1706. Apart from clocks Wilkins also made watches and was chosen as Company Steward in 1686.
