A top quality example of North-western clockmaking from the latter half of the 18th century.

The splendid and heavy mahogany case shows many features of the locality at this period (c1770), including blind fret moulding to the hood and a band above the wavy-top trunk door, canted front corners of the base and ogee-shaped feet. The dial is unusual in having an engraved design with silvered highlights as well as the older-style matting around them. The whole is surmounted by a rotating moon disc, and the date is shown by a centre-mounted calendar hand, a feature which is more often encountered on Northern clocks than their Southern cousins.

Helm appears not to have been working for long; dates I can find range from 1761 to 1780 and this clock would have been made about the middle of that period.
